The theme of this year school’s graduation was “Believe in redefining the Impossible.”

Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Education, Matafeo Falana’ipupu Aiafi, who was invited to address the students, encouraged all of them to persevere, trust in God and keep working hard.

“Work hard and God will do the rest,” he said. “Keep up the good work because at the end of the day it is all about yourself.”

Matafeo also reminded the students not to forget the hard work being put in by their parents so that they could get an education.

School Principal, Tu’ugatiti Leo Le’auanae, congratulated the graduating class.

“I am confident that your education at Pesega has prepared you academically, practically, and spiritually to be ready to ‘run with patience the race that is set before you and that you will perform well,” he said. “My final advice – is to look for opportunities to return. The race of life often brings you full circle on life’s track so you will able to return and bless Pesega with your time, talent, and treasure.”

The honour of becoming Dux was humbling according to LeGrande.

The young man who is already a weekly columnist for the Samoa Observer’s Newspaper In Education section plans to become an author.

“I want to be an inspiration for Polynesian youths and adults alike and be a voice for young adults and youth everywhere,” he said.

“I wasn’t really trying to get valedictorian, I just tried my best in my subjects and prayed. I guess it paid off.”

LeGrande is the son of Mika Lolo, Principal at the LDS Church Middle School at Pesega and Emily Lolo.

A proud Mika said he was over the moon when he heard his son’s name as the top student for Pesega College.

“I just want to thank God for everything,” he said. “My son is a hardworking kid and he deserves it.”
