The MV Lady Naomi Voyage enroute to American Samoa from the Matautu Wharf last Friday was called back after three hours at sea due to a sudden shut down of the vessel’s engine.
Samoa Shipping Corporation Engineers inspected the ferry upon return and found an engine glitch to be the cause of the problem, which was rectified later that afternoon.
A three hour sea trial was also carried out that day by the Ministry of Works, Transport and Infrastructure (M.W.T.I) surveyors and S.S.C engineers to ensure the ferry is safe for travel and complies with the safety standards.
The voyage was re-scheduled and departed at 11:30 that night.
A hundred and sixty eight of the 181 original passengers set sail on the second trip.
The ferry arrived in Pago Pago safely and has since returned to Apia.
There were no further incidents reported in the later trips.
S.S.C has commissioned an independent investigation to ascertain the actual cause of the engine failure as safety of the traveling public is its’ prime concern.
