WATER BURST: The Samoa Water Authority explained that a burst pipe at Tuaefu required them to switch off the supply of water unexpectedly. An announced disruption to the water supply at Vaitele on Monday night and a large part of Tuesday has irked a resident who has criticised the Samoa Water Authority.

The man who only wants to be identified as Ioane, fearing repercussions for speaking up, said his family had been unexpectedly left without water from 8p.m. on Monday until well after midday on Tuesday.

“A notice on the radio or the television will be great to let us all know that our water will be cut off the whole night,” Ioane said.

“Our water suddenly went off from around 8p.m. last night (Monday night).

“I didn’t really pay attention to it because sometimes our water is like that.

“However, when one of my children went to take a shower at around 9p.m. he came back and told me that our water was still off.”

Ioane said he immediately contacted the Samoa Water Authority’s after hours number.

“At that time, they told me that they are fixing a pipeline at Tuaefu and we will be able to get our water running again at 11p.m.,” he said.

“That did not happen. The water never came on again for the whole night.

“This morning (Tuesday), I thought it might have been on but there is still nothing.

“I contacted some of my relatives around the area and they were also in the same situation as me.”

Ioane said he understands that sometimes, there will be issues with the water supply.

“In that case, then they should at least inform people so they can be prepared,” he said.

“Right now, there are so many people affected who have been caught out unaware.”

When the Samoa Observer contacted the Samoa Water Authority, an official denied that the water was off at all. “We only turned off the water around 5 o’clock this morning (Tuesday),” she said.

“However, due to a burst pipeline at Tuaefu, we had to immediately turn off the water to those villages this morning.”

“It was one of those incidents that happened so quickly and the Office did not have time to warn the public.

“So we apologise for any inconvenience that might have been caused.”

The official assured that water would be restored as soon as possible.
