A minor tremor that struck Samoa yesterday afternoon was not strong enough to generate a tsunami.
The earthquake struck 185 kilometres south west of Apia during the lunch hour.
Senior Scientific Officer for the Geophysics Section of the Meteorology Division of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Ali’imalemanu Malaefatu Leavasa, confirmed the quake.
Measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale, the earthquake occurred at exactly 12:35pm local time.
Ali’imalemanu said it was strongly felt by people using big buildings, like the six storey structures in Apia.
Surprisingly, he said yesterday’s tremor was the sixth earthquake to have hit Samoa this month.
He also confirmed that the quake was only felt in the Samoan region as it was not picked up by other seismic stations in the region.
The Meteorology Division has seven seismic stations throughout Samoa.
These stations are in Asau, Vaiaata, Togitogiga, Afiamalu, Afulilo and Apia. All the stations picked up the quake. No damages were reported.
