Speaking during the launch of the 2015 Commonwealth Youth Games Sponsorship campaign on Thursday night, the Prime Minister said “preliminary estimates at this stage indicate it will be over $20 million tala.”

He added that the amount does not include the major upgrade of the Apia Park facilities and the Aquatic Centre and some of the sports equipments and coaches funded by the Chinese government or the International Games Advisor provided by Australia.

“Under the Commonwealth Federation rules we have to meet the full cost of accommodating, feeding and transporting athletes and coaches while attending the games, to all sporting venues particularly the fields of play,”

“We’ll have to meet international standards, that is why, as we have done successfully with the 2007 South Pacific Games, we need your help and support to provide sponsorship in whatever way and service appropriate for your company to source services and products,”

“As you well know no such major undertaking such as this can be successful without the support of the national business community” “We were successful with the Small Islands Developing States Conference and I’m confident we can repeat it for the Commonwealth Games 2015.”

WINNING SMILE: Nadya Va’a (right) won the medal design competition. She was congratulated by officials including Cabinet Ministers on Thursday night.“I, not only as Chairman of the organizing committee but also as leader of our nation, am asking for your support and help whether in cash donation or provision of services or products needed to deliver the games not just successfully, but fantastically, come September.”

In turn, to recognize the generosity extended by the sponsors, the Prime Minister said that the government has passed special legislation that will provide income tax relief to those who help, as well as other benefits.

Tuilaepa also mentioned that in 2007 during the S.P.G., $15 million was raised in sponsorships.

The Prime Minister also pointed out the rarity of the opportunity for Samoa to host the games saying that it would not be for another 96 years “before we can expect another turn”.

The games are held every four years alternating between six commonwealth regions. This year Samoa will have its turn for Oceania. The larger Oceania members: Fiji, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Tonga have yet to get a turn.

Tuilaepa said this is another precious opportunity for Samoa to show the world that it is capable to host these events.

OFFICIALS AND SUPPORTERS: Guests and government officials at the launch of the Commonwealth Youth Games Sponsorship campaign.

To have this opportunity to showcase our unique and proud culture and also to tell our story of we are, where we have come from and where we aim to be.

“The benefits not only in terms of publicity and advertising but opening up opportunities and competition for our young athletes, sports officials and administrators, our businesses and services, our culture and the unique beauty and environment are significant and invaluable.

“It will be up to us to take and use them to our best advantage.”
