The warning came from the Assistant Chief Executive Officer of Meteorology, Mulipola Ausetalia Titimaea, during a press conference yesterday.

The A.C.E.O said wind could be as strong as 50km per hour tonight and tomorrow and he has warned the country to be careful.

“Occasional rain and strong winds will affect the group,” he said.

“A heavy rainfall warning remains in effect for Samoa and flooding is possible for vulnerable areas.”

As a result of the convergence, Mulipola said they have issued a high surf advisory for coastal areas due to strong northwest winds.

“In this trough, we’ve noticed that a new convection trough is building up.”

Mulipola said that could develop into a cyclone.

“We have been working collaboratively with our centres all around and they actually agree on the possibility of this development becoming a tropical depression,” he said.

“We are expecting a lot of high swells especially in the coastal areas.

“So the prediction now is that tonight we should be expecting strong winds and heavy rain and that would continues tomorrow.

“If these troughs continue then we will activate our tropical cyclone system to warn everyone.”

In the meantime, however, Mulipola there is no need to panic.

He also advised crews of small alias and fishing boats to be cautious.
