AusAid’s Pacific Leadership Programme (PLP) conducted an Adaptive Leadership session with Women Leaders of Samoa’s Government.
The two day event was hosted at the Tanoa Tusitala Hotel at Sogi.
WinLA (Women in Leadership Advocates) is an informal group of Woman Parliamentarians, CEO’s and PSC Commissioners, led by the longest-serving Member of Parliament, Hon Fiame Naomi Mataafa.
The PLP facilitators included Samoa’s own Lelei LeLaulu who lives and works in Washington DC. LeLaulu is currently advising the World Bank on Oceans and serves on the Advisory Panel for Business and Sustainability of the International Finance Corporation.
Lelei outlined the main objective of the 2-day session, “PLP supports Pacific Leaders to address developmental issues, with a focus on working together in coalitions to drive effective change and sustainable reforms.”
“We hope that WinLA members can take this away as a tool, which may be adapted to the work in their own organisations and ministries.”
PLP is rolling out Adaptive Leadership in 4 Pacific Countries, which is a practice of mobilising people to not only tackle difficult situations, but to thrive in them.
PLP’s local country representative, Tuiloma Sina Retzlaff said;
“One of the key features of adaptive leadership is to distinguish between the technical fix - which is often the law reform or policy, and the adaptive challenge – which is the mindset change. The changes in behaviour needed to really make the reform effective and sustainable.”
The WinLA group shared their own insights and experiences in facing developmental challenges and recognised areas where Adaptive Leadership could be applied to improving future responses, approaches and processes in their own organisations. Tuiloma added, “PLP as a programme, has also taken away a lot of learnings about leadership application, from the personal insights of this dynamic group of women.”
