The owner of the Resort, Soraya May said the focus of the day was for upcoming artists to show their talents.

“Today is to celebrate Bob Marley’s birthday, it would be his 70th birthday if he was still alive. Le Vasa Resort is the major sponsor of this event,” she said.

“Vailima Breweries is also a sponsor and we are working together with the Y-Not Band who wanted to open this stage for up and coming artists in Samoa.

“We have featured several bands like the Laban Family, Y-Not and Ben Vai, the Silver Bullet Band and others.”

“This is to give them a place to show their talent to Samoan people and really for the up and coming artists and that is the most important thing plus of course Bob Marley’s birthday.”

Ms. May said that the event was held at Manono-uta because hardly any events are held on that side of the island.

“We wanted to have it on this side of the island because not many people here get the opportunity to see events like this, she said.

“[And] it’s also a chance for the local people to go to a beautiful venue on the western-most point of the country. We’ve got the beautiful sunset, the Malietoa monument which is a peace monument commemorating the last fight between the Tongans and the Samoans which took place here.

“It’s got historical significance and you also get to look out across to Manono and Savaii islands. It’s very rare that we get the opportunity to have any special events here.”

“This is the first time the event has been held here but the Y-Not Band has been celebrating Bob Marley’s birthday for eight years now in Samoa,” she said.

“They’ve staged it a few times in town after first starting out at Apia Park.

“They have been very successful and so we have discussed that if today is a successful day for us, then we would like to continue sponsoring the upcoming artists of Samoa.

“It’s a real chance for them to get on the stage and show their talents whereas many businesses are not going to hire people without experience so this is their chance to make a beginning.”
