The Samoa College Class of 1991 – 1994 donated books and learning resources for the College’s library yesterday afternoon.
The Class President, Tea Tepora Wright, told the Weekend Observer that the donation reflects an ongoing desire by the members of the class to give back to the school that helped shaped their lives.
The books and learning resources are worth more than $10,000. It was collected by members of the class residing in New Zealand. “As you can see now, many of these different books are very useful not only for the students but for teachers as well,” she said.
The donation continues a project that culminated in June last year with the presentation of resources for a ‘smart class room’ housed in the Samoa College library, consisting of a ceiling mounted wall projector, whiteboard slide screen and flat screen TV, VCR player, and renovation of shelter area outside the library.
“After presenting that donation last year to the library, we noticed that there were no books so we decided that this is the next thing that the class is going to do,” Mrs. Wright said.
“We haven’t confirmed the idea of the next new project.”
The President acknowledged the members of the class residing in New Zealand who spearheaded the book collection, notably Tauasili Anesi and their executive team.
Samoa College Principal, Reupena Rimoni, accepted the donation yesterday.
“This isn’t a cheap donation, and this is where the heart of this school at – reading!”
he said.
“We need to read and read as many books and newspapers as we can – but it seems that many of you tend to get more into using phones these days,” he said.
“Literacy is very important in today’s world.”
“Therefore – thank you very much for your support in so many ways.
The school looks forward to working with you in the future.”
