Manunu Primary School officially opened its newly reconstructed school on Thursday just in time for the start of the 2015 school year.
The reconstruction was funded by Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects worth $220,000.
A handover ceremony took place at the school grounds where the village thanked the people of Japan for their generosity.
Ambassador of Japan to Samoa, Tuimaugaoali’i Kazumasa Shibuta, congratulated the Manunu school committee for their efforts and commitment to the project.
He also reiterated Japan’s commitment to supporting Samoa’s development needs.
“Japan will continue to support educational development as it is listed as a priority in the Strategy for the Development of Samoa 2012- 2016,” he said.
The grant scheme was introduced to Samoa in 1991 and since then hundreds of local organizations and schools have benefitted from it.
This is the third Japan funded school to be handed over this year so far.
The other two, Vaovai and Matautu Primary School and Fasitoo-Tai Primary School were handed over in January 2015 with more projects in the pipeline.
Japan’s “Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects” provides assistance to non-governmental organisations, primary schools, hospitals and other non-profit associations that have a direct impact on the well-being of communities.
Japan has been working in partnership with the Samoan Government since 1991 to further develop such grassroots and human security projects.
