A man from Upolu drowned on Monday night after going out fishing despite official warnings to take care due to concerns about rough conditions at sea.

Napo Leota, a 51-yearold male from Mulifanua, was confirmed dead by Police and hospital officials.

The Meteorology division gave warnings most of last week including issuing a small craft advisory that remained in effect until Tuesday for all Samoa coastal waters.

The advisory warned of fresh and gusty winds at times and high swells. Police said they were at hospital “to investigate and fill in forms.”

An official at the National hospital confirmed the drowning yesterday.

The man is believed to have gone out fishing with his friends when he drowned.

Met Service officers had given repeated warnings about the conditions as a convergence zone caused rough weather at sea and flooding on land.

Acting Commissioner Fauono Talelei Tapu could not be contacted for comment.

Meantime, the Fiji-based Regional Meteorological Service Centre gave an all clear following the departure of Cyclone Kofi.

“No significant tropical disturbance analysed or forecast in the area,” it said on its website yesterday.
