Although the family held a meeting at Sapapali’i last weekend in an attempt to find a holder of the title, family members who spoke to the Samoa Observer yesterday said no solution was found.

Papali’i Siliva Taouma, of Malietoa Talavou’s clan, said a decision could still take a while.

“Our side of the family haven’t decided on anyone yet,” he said.

According to him, the final say will come down to the heirs of Malietoa Talavou and Malietoa Moli because the heirs of Malietoa Natuitasina have given their support to Fa’amausili Moli to carry the title.

Several years ago, Fa’amausili Moli, the son of the late Head of State, His Highness Malietoa Tanumafili II, was bestowed the title at Malie.

The decision, however, was the subject of a petition by other Malietoa clans. In the end, the Land and Titles court ruled against Fa’amausili.

According to Papali’i John Taimalelagi, the heirs of Malietoa Natuitasina supports Fa’amausili.

“We have made a decision,” he said.

“We feel for the family and we don’t want to continue to erode the integrity of the title by having this mess drag out in public so that members of the public would poke fun at our family".

“So the final decision for us is that we support Fa’amausili Moli”.

Papali’i John also urged other members of their family to come together in unity and make a decision that would benefit the family.

“I love my family very much,” he said. “It’s time we make a decision and move forward". Papali’i Siliva agrees.

He said they have been trying to solve the matter in a peaceful and humble manner.

“We need to be a family that leads by good example in this county,” he said. “We don't want to be the family that gives bad examples".

According to Papali’i Siliva, during the meeting at Sapapali’i last Saturday, Fa’amausili Moli asked the family to allow them some time to decide.

He added that there were other members of Malietoa Moli’s clan who were not present and he understands that they don’t support Fa’amausili Moli.

Both Papali’i John and Papali’i Siliva hope that the family can reach a peaceful compromise to avoid another Court battle.
