They will lace up their rugby boots and take to the paddock for a good cause. They will be in Apia for the Samoa Golden Oldies Rugby Club fundraiser, where all the proceeds will be donated to Samoa Cancer Society. The fundraising is the second event the club has put together. The first event was the very successful Mu’umu’u classic.

A member of the organizing committee, Peters Poulos, told the Sunday Samoan that they have chosen “superheroes” as a theme in respect of the courage and bravery of cancer patients in fighting the illness. “This event is also about honouring the memory of our late member, Isitolo Leota, who passed away three years ago with cancer,” Mr. Poulos said.

“We also want to honour and encourage our members who are fighting against it”.

“The event is a bit of fun but with a huge meaning. Cancer is something that we can all relate to”.

Mr. Poulos added that he has created this as a journey.

“This is also about creating memories, from the marching, to the hair cutting session together, to the playing together to the after party and the prize giving it’s all a journey to build the bond between members of the club”.

Mr. Poulos believed that the when you are willing to make a difference you don’t just point the finger but make it happen.

“Every sene will be presented to the Samoa Cancer Society”.

The Golden Oldies Club has more than 70 members. They range from 35-year-olds plus to the oldest member who is 88 years.

He is Sapa’u Lolesio Vitale. The programme for the day will start in the afternoon with a parade from the Fire station towards the town clock.

The parade will be followed by a hair cutting session with more than 20 members to go bald.

The Battle of the Superheroes will be a touch rugby match between the superheroes and the villains.

The programme will end with a prize giving and the presentation of the Isitolo Leota Cup to whichever team wins.

“The saying, “Many hands make light work,” speaks volumes of truth and with this we humbly seek your assistance by way of sponsorship or donation and every sene counts,” said Poulos.

For anyone who wants to donate you can contact Peters Poulos at mob: 685-7232300 or 685-7664239.

The event is open to members of the public.
