Former Cabinet Minister, Leafa Vitale, has passed away.
The Head of Emergency at the hospital, Dr. Isaia Taualapini, confirmed his death yesterday.
During a telephone interview, Dr. Isaia told the Samoa Observer that Leafa passed away on Monday.
“He was brought in three days ago from his home,” said Dr. Isaia. “He had already passed away when he was brought in". Asked for the cause of death, Dr. Isaia was not at liberty to divulge the details. Leafa was in his early 70s.
During his time in Parliament, he was the Minister of Works and then Minister of Women’s Affairs.
In 2000, Leafa was sentenced to life in prison with another former Minister, the late Toi Aukuso for plotting the assassination of former Minister of Public Works, Luagalau Levaula Kamu in 1999.
Leafa was granted parole in 2010, on the basis of ill health. During an interview with the Samoa Observer in 2010, at his home in Malie, Leafa asked for forgiveness.
“To all the people of Samoa, I want to say I am deeply sorry for what I did. Please forgive me".
It was not possible to get a comment from the family yesterday about the plan for his funeral service.
