It was entertaining and impressive.
Those were the most common comments from members of the audience at Apia Park last night where the 5th Commonwealth Youth Games was officially opened.
The Head of State, His Highness Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese Efi, declared the Games opened.
Hundreds of students were involved during the hour-long show which started with a fireworks display.
Colonel Elizabeth Jugas, of the 9th Mission Support Command, 1984 US Army Hospital, said the opening was outstanding.
“Oh my God it was very impressive,” she said.
“There are so many countries that are here representing and it was just amazing.”
For Colonel Jugas, she was most impressed about the Samoan dances.
“This is the first time I’ve been here and I’m glad that I was able to witness this tonight. The people of Samoa are very warm,” she said.
“They are always welcoming and friendly and they always go out of their way to welcome tourists in their country. I really love it.”
“Thank you for the opportunity to attend the event.”
Alai Samuelu said the event was just beautifully done.
“From the beginning of the ceremony until the end, it was just wonderful,” she said.
“I am so proud to be a Samoan and as for the children that performed tonight they have done a great job.
“All their hard work has paid off. I know that for some of these children, tonight will be an unforgettable night and they will tell everyone that they danced at the opening of Commonwealth Youth Games.”
A.P.T.C students, Caroline Pige and Helen Kaie from Solomon Islands wished Papua New Guinea and Fiji team all the best.
“The opening tonight was brilliant,” they said.
“Now bring on the sports.”
Limala’u Luafalealo and her family from Australia were impressed.
“It was an awesome celebration. Well done Samoa!”
