The mat movement is the 2nd phase of the Climate Change movement held in Australia in 2014 where they protested against fossil fuel.

Two representatives from the S.V.S.G. Juniors stood together with other participating Pacific islands youths to Say No to the fossil fuel industry in Australia.

This year they have a different target. The 12 participating countries will focus on Pope Francis in the Vatican upon his return from the United States of America.

The group of 12 to 15 warriors will undertake a peaceful demonstration at the Vatican and to gain full support of the Pope in divesting the Vatican of fossil fuels.

According to the president of the S.V.S.G. Juniors, Togia Nathan Ryan the aim for S.V.S.G. Juniors is because of the concern they have about the changes in the climate especially in the Pacific islands for our future generations.

Togia said that they are targeting the pope because he was the first church leader to write a book about Climate Change and he quoted that “Human activity is the cause of Climate Change.”

Raedena Solomona is 25 years of age and she will be representing the Samoa Victim Support Group Juniors at this event next month.

Solomona said this movement is one of the most important tasks that the 12 members’ country will be addressing, especially the youth’s members.

“This is not a movement just for S.V.S.G. but it’s a movement for the whole of Samoa.”

Another representative of the S.V.S.G. Juniors, Ierome Fune Vaefaga said this event is very important for Samoa and it’s a big role for the youth because these issues are being faced every day and it’s time to do something about them.

S.V.S.G. Juniors was established in 2010. They joined the 350.org organization in 2013 where they participated in last year’s movement to strike against fossil fuel industry in Australia. Samoa is amongst Pacific island countries including Fiji, Tonga, Papua New Guinea, Marshall Islands, Tokelau, Kiribati, Palau, Tuvalu, Niue, Federal State of Micronesia and Solomon Islands.
