Samoa’s Steffi Carruthers has done it again.
After creating history and becoming the first Pacific Oceania player to win a professional tournament in Mexico in June this year, the 22 year old showed her class yet again.
Partnered with Russia’s Alinah Silich, the duo took out the doubles finals in the US$10,000 International Tennis Federation (I.T.F.) Pro-Circuit tournament in Bol, Croatia on September 12.
Up against Seed number three, Barbara Kotelesova of Slovakia and Natalia Sipek of Slovenia, Steffi and Alinah powered through to win 7-6(3) 3-6 [10-5] .
Steffi’s mother, Tagaloa Yvonne Carruthers said it was a hard game after the pair had won the first set. “There were some nerves there,” she said.
However after losing the second set, they “put everything together” and came through with the win.
Steffi wanted to thank individuals and groups who have supported her and her tennis family in the Pacific, Tagaloa said.
“She especially wanted to thank Women in Business, Iuni Vaeau, her family and friends whose financial support has been crucial in allowing her to take part in these Pro Circuit tournaments.” People who have contacted her on facebook have provided encouragement and support in what is quite a lonely life, said Tagaloa.
With two more tournaments to play in Croatia, Steffi is then scheduled to go to London before returning to the United States and her coach, Carlos Casely. “Carlos deserves a special mention. “He Skypes with her before her and after her games, analyzing how she performed.”
