Today is the last day for voters to register for next year’s General Elections.
And at the registration centre at Mulinu’u yesterday, the last minute rush was hard to ignore.
From morning until late night, officials at the Office of the Electoral Commissioner were on their feet trying to accommodate voters.
The queue was long and even the old Land and Titles Court house was used.
A committee member for Papali’tele Niko Lee Hang, Peleti Hall is all too familiar with people leaving things until the last minute.
Mr. Hall said for the past few days, the Electoral Office has been opened until 10pm.
“You see a lot of people rushing in today and it really shows that the majority of our people haven’t registered,” said the committee member.
“The Office is trying the best they can and I believe that if it wasn’t for the committees that help in bringing in people, you would find that many more people haven’t bothered to come in.”
In support of his candidate Papali’itele, Mr. Hall said the roll for the Faleata Urban seat that the M.P. is running from is bigger than the individual voters seat he represented.
He pointed out the Individual voters roll had a roll of 1165 compared to the Faleata Urban seat it has more than 3000 registered voters.
Another committee member Maua Selimo for Sagaga le Falefa said he wasn’t surprised with the “nature of Samoans” to leave everything in the last minute.
“Most of people said they have work and that is a very common excuse,” said Maua.
“But I think if they really value their votes and how important it is they would really make time for him and not leave it on the last day to get it done…there is only so much you can do.”
A voter for Gagaemauga no3, Iosua Viko who resides in Siusega agreed with the committee members.
Mr. Viko said he had just got a new job and it was hard for him to leave work to get his registration done.
He added because he wanted to support his candidate who is an Assistant Police Commissioner, Nafo’itoa Talaimanu Keti he chose to register yesterday.
