The Assistant Commissioner of Prison and Correction Services, Ulugia Niuia Aumua, confirmed the attack during an interview with the Sunday Samoan.

“On the fifth of November there was an incident that involved two female prisoners,” he said.

“It started off with them hurling abuse at each other and one of the prisoners couldn’t take it anymore and grabbed a machete and attacked her [fellow] inmate with it.”

“Luckily, staff members were on hand and they restrained the aggressor.

“The victim suffered superficial cuts, however, they were separated and the aggressor was isolated and removed for precaution reasons.”

“The victim was taken to the hospital to ensure that the injuries were not serious and on that same day she was brought back.”

Ulugia added the attack was reported to Police due to its serious nature.

“We reported the matter to the Criminal Investigation Unit and at the same time the hospital contacted the police as part of their protocols.”

“The C.I.U staff came over and conducted interviews and carried on their investigations so at this stage I’m not sure where the police are at with the criminal investigation.” Ulugia explained how the prisoners were able to access a machete.

“The machete was just on hand because they have just came back from their work party and when they came through, they were arguing.”

“The staff saw the aggressor grabbed the machete and attacked the victim with it,” he said.

According to Ulugia, the argument started when the victim accused the aggressor of wearing her dress.

The aggressor is facing internal punishment in prison while waiting for criminal charges to be added onto her sentence.
