A coaching course for local football referees started yesterday with two facilitators from FIFA hosting the course.
President of Football Federation Samoa, Rev. Laupama Solomona, welcomed the two facilitators and spoke about the importance of the course.
“Referee plays a vital role in the development of this sport,” Rev. Laupama said.
“This particular course will enhance the knowledge and uplift the skills of our local referees.”
“[And] we are confident that our locals will learn a lot of new things from this course.”
One of the facilitators, Mark Hester, said the course is a part of FIFA’s ongoing support in developing its member countries.
“The idea behind this is to improve the uniform and the consistency of refereeing so that the games in Europe look the same as the games in Samoa.”
“For instance, we need to make sure that we have the same laws for the game, and make sure that games are refereed the same way.”
Among the participants is Suauu Simone from Vaito’omuli Savaii. He is excited to be part of the course.
“Soccer is not as big as rugby here in Samoa, [but] if we develop it more, I’m sure that more and more people will love to be a part of this game,” he said.
“I am here to learn as much I can and will use whatever new skills and knowledge I will get to help develop our young children in this sport. I am excited to be here today and this week for this course.”
