Prime Minister, Tuilaepa Sa’ilele Malielegaoi, is scheduled to meet Pope Francis, at the Vatican on 3 December.
The Prime Minister will later meet with the Secretary of State. The meeting with the Pope is one of numerous meetings Cabinet has given approval to the Prime Minister to attend, from 21 November until 8 December 2015.
On 26 November, Tuilaepa will attend the fourth France-Oceania Summit in Paris.
This meeting will discuss ways for France to assist countries of the Oceania region, especially in achieving their sustainable development goals relating to the environment and climate change.
The President of France, Francois Hollande, invited the Prime Minister to attend this meeting.
Next, the P.M will attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Malta, to be held from 27–29 November.
The Commonwealth Heads of Government will converse about issues relating to climate change, migration, violent extremism and radicalism and sustainable development goals.
Voting for a new General Secretary for the Commonwealth will also take place. This is a biennial meeting, previously held in Sri Lanka in 2013.
After that, the Prime Minister will go to the C.O.P 21 United Nations Climate Change Conference Leaders Event in Paris on 30 November. Prime Minister Tuilaepa is expected to deliver a speech at this meeting. The main objective of the annual Conference of Parties (C.O.P) is to review the Convention’s implementation. The meeting aims to achieve a legally binding and universal agreement on climate, with the aim of keeping global warming below 2°C.
C.O.P 21 will be one of the largest international conferences ever held in the country. The conference is expected to attract close to 50,000 participants from across the world, from governments, intergovernmental organisations, U.N agencies, N.G.Os and civil society.
The first C.O.P took place in Berlin in 1995 and significant meetings since then have included C.O.P 3 where the Kyoto Protocol was adopted, C.O.P 11 where the Montreal Action Plan was produced, C.O.P 15 in Copenhagen and C.O.P 17 in Durban, where the Green Climate Fund was created.
Once that meeting is done, the Prime Minister will head to the Vatican for his meeting with the Pope.
