A “minor infection” hospitalised Prime Minister, Tuilaepa Sa’ilele Malielegaoi, on Wednesday night.

As of press time last night, he was recovering well at the Tupua Tamasese Meaole Hospital.

Several attempts to get an official comment about the Prime Minister’s condition from his Office were unsuccessful. But a source, who spoke to the Samoa Observer on the condition of anonymity, said the Prime Minister was taken from Parliament on Wednesday night to the hospital where he was admitted.

“What I heard was that it was some minor infection,” a hospital official told the Samoa Observer.

“I have heard from one of the doctors that he is in a good condition and very stable and that he has some infection that caused high fever.

“So I think they were taking a lot of extra precautions, preventative approach to prevent complications. He is here for just some preventative measures to prevent it from getting worse but he is very stable.”

Tuilaepa is expected to be released today from the Intensive Care Unit where he has been since Wednesday night.

Another source close to the Prime Minister said Tuilaepa is in hospital as a result of a three-week old wound to his foot after he accidentally stood on a nail.

He understands that the incident happened while he was inspecting renovations at the home of a relative.

Yesterday, the source said there have been several visitors to see Tuilaepa but have all been turned away since he is in need of much rest.

“Ministers that have come in to see him were also told they couldn’t because he needs rest.”

Tuilaepa, however, was driven straight from the Fale Fono on Wednesday night during a Parliamentary session after “feeling the cold”.

“He has been told by many people that he needs to get some good rest but that is one thing he doesn’t know how to do,” said the source.

“Maybe someone should tell him that he needs to practice what he preaches because he certainly is in need of a lot of rest.”

He said sending the Prime Minister home to rest was ruled off as an option “since he has an office at the house the chances are he wouldn’t be in bed but there”.

“So the best option for him was to stay here at the hospital where he can get enough rest inside his room without being disturbed or him getting the chance to do work while he shouldn’t.”

The source could reveal no more but asked politely if Tuilaepa could not be disturbed because he needs enough time to recuperate as he never rests.
