There is a remote possibility of the planned fish loin plant being located in Savai’i.
In fact, the government has given the investors, Bumble Bee Foods, the option to consider the big island.
That’s what Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sa’ilele Malielegaoi told Parliament on Friday, in response to requests from Members of Parliament about setting up the fish loin plant in Savai’i.
Tuilaepa said there are many places in Savai’i that could accommodate such ventures.
“Savai’i has many towns like Asau that requires little work and the same as Salelologa,” said Tuilaepa.
“But the problem with the developments in the big island is it’s expensive. Foreign companies are always looking for cheaper ways to start a business and to make it profitable."
“That is another reason why they ask to have it set up in Apia but we have given the option to setup in Savai’i.”
Another area the Prime Minister pointed to is investors ask to invest in Upolu because they require the use of the airport to send off their products to the United States.
He reminded M.Ps that a bread crust is better than nothing.
“What the representatives are asking for is what the government wants and supports,” he said.
“But we should also consider the proposal and needs from the investor because if we force it on to them, it will result in them leaving and disappearing."
“Even if it’s just bread crust, there is something to chew on than them leaving and never come back.”
Concerns from Opposition Leader, Palusalue Fa’apo II that the fish plant will “deafen tourists with its foul smell” were dismissed by Tuilaepa.
He said there are two parts to the project with the cleaning process of the fish being setup in an area close to the dumping area.
At the moment, Tuilaepa said they are negotiating with two companies and if it turns out well, operation is likely to start the beginning of next year.
On Tuesday, M.P for Fa’asaleleaga no.2 Papali’i Taeu Masipau suggested to have the loin plant in Savai’i.
He told Parliament people on the island of Upolu are already benefiting from the Yazaki Samoa factory offering more than a 1,000 jobs.
However, using the Salelologa wharf for the loin plant will help the people of Savai’i by generating employment.
Associate Minister for the Ministry of Women, Social Community and Development Gatoloaifaana Amataga Gidlow agreed.
The M.P from Fa’asaleleaga No.1 said what is good for Upolu is also good for Savai’i.
