It is now the latter half of June and the Small Islands Developing States (S.I.D.S) is definitely just around the corner.
Fitting as it is for a Small Island State to host the S.I.D.S conference in the coming months, preparations have been amped up and the excitement ever escalating amongst the youth.
Come the 31st of August, the opening ceremony will be complemented by a Samoan Cultural performance, projecting a part of Samoa’s identity to the world.
Participating schools are in full swing with dance practices and are eagerly awaiting the chance of a lifetime to perform in front of world leaders from around the globe.
Close to 1,000 youths comprised of students from Don Bosco of the Salesian Order, Saint Mary’s and Marist Brothers Primary Schools including fire-knife dancers from the Taeaoafua Youth group will light up the field with their cultural performances and fire knife routines. As a finale of the night, the reigning Miss Samoa Ms Susana Fanueli and former Miss Samoa titleholders will perform the Samoan dance of grace and subtlety, the Siva Taupou. The involvement of the schools and youth further solidifies the underlying theme of the SIDS 2014 Conference, Partnerships.
Like the work of the church groups on the landscaping around Tuanaimato, the schools are offering their time without a cost, and have been receptive to the invitation by government to put on a spectacle for some three thousand participants from around the world. This is an opportunity of a lifetime that may only happen once in Samoa, and these youth are very much excited to showcase their identity, their culture, and their heritage.
