SIVA MAI: Action from the second day of Samoa Ne’i Galo festival in front of the government building.Samoa Nei Galo is the name that captured the pride and spirit of the schools celebrating the three-day cultural festival in front of the Government Building this week.

Concluding today, Samoa College teacher Su’emalo Fuimaono said that the “Festival is an opportunity to broaden the spotlight of Samoan culture and the fascinating arts.”

“The Samoan Slap Dance (sasa) is a riveting competition that encompasses everything that makes the Samoan culture so dynamic and captivating.”

“It combines skill, strength, artistry, and fearlessness. There is no other competition like it in the world.”

Mareta Taulima, of Satuimalufilufi, said hopefully next year the festival’s committee will add in the fireknife dance into the competition.

“To myself, that is one of the most popular daily attractions for visitors, who take great enjoyment in an entertaining programme that’s both funny and exciting,” she said.

“The programme will grow if we add in more and more so that not only will it help these youngsters to learn and know more about the culture but it will be good for the economy of Samoa.”

“As you can see, hundreds of high school students demonstrated their knowledge of Samoan culture by competing in a series of traditional Samoan practices and life skills. It was fun.”

In a press release issued in May this year by the Ministry of Education Sports and Culture (M.E.S.C.) it said the festival is to promote culture through education.

“Called, ‘Samoa Ne’i Galo Festival’, (Lest we forget Samoa) the name leaps to the occasion of cultural pride and festivities,” the press release reads.

“Dance, oratory speeches, and drama will be the main attractions for the competition among fired up secondary school students.”

Lefaga College, Avele College, St Joseph College, Samoa College and Aana College took to  the stage yesterday.

The festival will finish today with Leifiifi College, Sagaga College and Aana College performing in the morning, before the prize giving in the afternoon.SIVA MAI: Action from the second day of Samoa Ne’i Galo festival in front of the government building.
