Prime Minster, Tuilaepa Sa’ilele Malielegaoi, has left for New York.
He is going to attend the high-level global launch of the International Year of Small Island Developing States in New York.
The programme for the launch in New York includes an address by the United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki Moon; the Secretary General for the Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States, Wu Hongbo; and also speeches by representatives of former host nations, Barbados in 1994 and Mauritius in 2005.
The Prime Minster and the Chairman of the Alliance of Small Island States from Nauru are also expected to make presentations at the launch.
This is a milestone event for the United Nations in celebrating this year especially for the Small Island States.
This is also an important year for Samoa in hosting the Small Island Developing States conference in September.
Samoa, as host country, will also reveal the progress of its preparations for the SIDS conference at a special side event to the global launch.
The Chief Executive Officer for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Aiono Mose Pouvi Sua and National Coordinator for the UN Conference on SIDS, Faalavaau Perina Sila are accompanying the Prime Minister.
