Members of the Marist Brothers Old Pupils Association (M.B.O.P.A) New Zealand were told to continue lighting the ‘Marist Torch’ by a living Champion of the fraternity in Auckland last week.

M.B.O.P.A. N.Z. hosted a send-off get together at the Quadas Bar and Restaurant in Manukau, Auckland New Zealand for one of its longstanding leaders, former St. Joseph’s College Principal, Br. Kevin O’Malley.

Br. Kevin addressed the Auckland members of the association and thanked them for putting together the event and he spoke of how extremely proud he was to see so many former students shinning their light in different walks of life.

Br. Kevin is visiting New Zealand on route from a trip to Rome and on a brief rest from his work in the Island of Kiribati where he’s been working over the past two years at the St. Louis College in Tarawa Kiribati.

Br. Kevin served in Samoa for 30 years as Principal of St. Joseph’s College Alafua and also as the Director of Catholic Education in Samoa.

During his reign as Principal of St. Joseph’s College he taught many current leaders of Government and successful business men and women who have gone through the Marist Education system in Samoa.

He returned to New Zealand and spent 10 years working with troubled young teenagers via the Ministry of Marist Youth in Auckland NZ. At the tender age of 75, Br. Kevin is still in his prime, doing what he loves best: Working with youth to improve their education and develop them into future leaders that will take responsibility for their own futures and their communities.

“I love what I do and meeting students like you and seeing how you’ve each gone onto create successful lives and families for yourselves is just wonderful and continues to inspire me to keep going.

“I have another two years in Kiribati, after that I don’t know what I’ll do, it may turn into ten years, or God may lead me somewhere else”, he said. Br. Kevin went on to congratulate the members of M.B.O.P.A. N.Z. for continuing to light the torch for the fraternity and keeping the Marist spirit alive.

He was presented with monetary gifts and souvenirs by the M.B.O.P.A. N.Z. members present. President of the 4.S.J.C.88 ma Uso Faimalo Allan Stowers thanked Br. Kevin for all his contribution to Catholic Education in Samoa, and particularly the Marist Education system.

“We will never forget how instrumental you have been in each of our journeys and we pray that God continues to bless you with good health to continue your work and so you may bless others as you’ve touched our lives”, said Faimalo.

M.B.O.P.A. N.Z. will also be holding its first official meeting this Sunday at 617 Mt Albert Rd, Royal Oak, St. Marcellin College, Auckland at 5pm, where all former students who attended Marist Schools in Samoa, male and female alike, are invited to attend. An agenda for the organisation’s activities for 2014 will be up for discussion.
