BRING ON THE GAMES: Some of the participants at the Commonwealth Youth Games workshop held in preparation for next year's big event.

Samoa’s preparations for the upcoming Commonwealth Youth Games to be held in Samoa kicked into another gear last week when Athletics Samoa Incorporated hosted a workshop for local officials.

Held at the National University of Samoa for two days, the meeting was to prepare local officials for the competition.

President of Athletics Samoa and Assistant Chief Executive of Sports Division of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture, Luātua Seumanutafa Epati, said it is important to prepare local officials for the event.

“Our preparation in terms of athletes started a long time ago,” he said. “But this workshop is to help officials.

“As we know for this event, between 90-100 officials will be needed because there are more than 50 events. So we are preparing early and we’re going to need all the time and help we can get to make sure the event is a success.

“There are 40 technical officials from overseas that will be joining us so we are preparing the local officials on how to do things on the field.”

Luātua said most of the voluntary officials are pastors from different congregations. A lot of other volunteers are teachers but the majority of them were not available last week due to exams.

“So we will be having another seminar on the second week of December which all the teachers will be joining because schools will finish around that time,” said Luatua.

“Our hope is that through these seminars, officials will acquire the knowledge about how to run things during the time of the Commonwealth Youth Games.”

Luatua said the competition will be another exciting event for Samoa.
