Most importantly, however, is the specific emphasis to eliminate violence against women.

The Minister of Women, Community and Social Development, Tolofuaivalelei Falemoe Lei’ataua, delivered the keynote address.

The 16 Days of Activism is guided by the national theme, “Promoting a safe and happy Samoa through genuine and sustainability partnerships to eliminate gender based violence,” adapted from the international theme, “From peace in home to Peace in the World.”

This theme speaks of the significance of partnership in addressing the issue of violence against women.

Violence is a critical human development issue and one which can no longer be addressed by one or two organizations alone but one which calls for partnerships of all levels and across all sectors to be able to tackle the issue associated with and at the root of the problem.

It requires teaching and engagement through networking and collaboration and it highlights the need to open dialogue and sharing of resources towards a safe and violence free community.

The programme for the 16 Days of Activism begins today and concludes on the 10th December with the very first human rights ceremony led by office of the Ombudsman in collaboration with the Ministry of women, Community and Social Development.

The theme for National Youth Week is, “T.A.L.A.V.O.U for Sustainable Development,” T.A.L.A.V.O.U stands for Towards a Legacy of Achievement, Versatility and Opportunity through partnership and Unity while the International Disability

Week follows the theme, “Sustainable Development: The Promise of Technology”

All events will be marked by a string of activities from Tuesday 25th November until the 10th December.
