Australia has committed A$12.6 million (T$25.2m) to P.A.C.M.A.S from 2008 to carry it through to the end of this current phase in 2015
The Office of Regulator and local broadcasters have received an invaluable piece equipment to enable them to perform their services better.
The help comes in the form of Spectrum Analyzer Broadcasting equipment donated by the government of Australia last week.
A Spectrum Analyzer is an essential tool for radio frequency and other engineers to view the spectrum of signals with their amplitude and frequencies. It is an invaluable part of electronic test equipment used in the design, test and maintenance of radio frequency circuitry and equipment.
Australia’s High Commissioner, Sue Langford, presented the equipment to the Regulator of Samoa, Donnie De Freitas, during a brief ceremony at The Orator Hotel.
“I have been told that this particular equipment is able to provide a crucial service that would not be possible using other means,” said the Australian High Commissioner.
“The Spectrum Analyzer offers a different measurement capability to other instruments as it is able to look at signals in the frequency domain.”
“The Rohde and Schwarz handheld spectrum analyzer is handy specially designed for use in the field and to take a large number of measurements a function which makes it an indispensable tool for our broadcasters in the region.”
The equipment is provided through the Australian-funded Pacific Media Assistance Scheme (P.A.C.M.A.S), which aims to build and strengthen the capacity of the Pacific media - including technical broadcasters in the region.
According to Ms. Langford, Australia has committed A$12.6 million (T$25.2m) to P.A.C.M.A.S from 2008 to carry it through to the end of this current phase in 2015.
“One of the key areas identified through a number of P.A.C.M.A.S surveys and research is that many of our regional broadcasters are struggling to deliver reliable and effective content due to the lack of trained personnel as well as tools and test equipment needed to help them fulfill their role and function,” said Ms. Langford.
“P.A.C.M.A.S has purchased as part of the program’s support for broadcast technicians this special broadcasting test equipment which is very versatile and can be used in many special applications to assist Samoa’s broadcasters.”
P.A.C.M.A.S takes a system wide approach to media strengthening that addresses the broader roles of communication, information and media.
The project is in Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Niue, Palau, PNG, Republic of Marshall Islands, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu and Samoa.
