Future engineer tops Samoa College
A young girl who wants to become Civil Engineer was named as the top student during Samoa College’s end of year prize giving yesterday.
Hellene Wallwork who hails from Gagaifoilevao Lefaga, Vaoala and Vaimoso is the eldest daughter of weightlifting coach, Tuaopepe Jerry and proud mother, Losa Wallwork.
Among her impressive line up of awards was the Samoa Observer’s Prize for Year 13 English. The second Samoa Observer award for Year 12 English was won by Malia Kasiano.
But the day belonged to Hellene. She took the ultimate prize with the runner up honour going to Jocelyn Laumata Soti. Tumau Epagelma Louis Tafuni was the Top Art Student for Year 13 and while Faaulu Amitai was the Top Commerce student.
Hellene’s dream is to become a Civil Engineer.
“I know it’s hard but I made it this far and I will keep on going until I reach my goal,” she said. “There are hardly any female engineers here in our country, so that’s what I want to be and that is what I am going to be in the future.”
About her time at Samoa College, Hellene said: “At Samoa College we have been nurtured academically by our teachers have raised us to stand on mountains but they have also taught to navigate the values because of their dedication and their commitment we now stand and ready to open another chapter in the book of life.”
Hellene said she could not have reached where she is today without the support of her family.
“I am eternally grateful to my parents Tuaopepe Jerry and Losa Wallwork, to my grandparents Seiuli and Su’a Wallwork, Puapuao and Piliopo Maia’i, to my beautiful loving sisters Piliopo, Sulia and Hanaand to my entire family.”
As for her father, Tuaopepe said he was extremely humbled about her daughter’s success.
“Hellene has made me the happiest father in the world,” he said.
“In all her school life, she is very determined and all we did was to support her.
“It is her that had put herself in this position together with the help of the Holy Spirit so we are so grateful for all that the Lord has done for our family.”
