Govt. launches Transport Plan

AT THE LAUNCH: Nanai Junior Saaga, Fa’amaini Fotu-Va’a, Reverend Danny Epati, Muliagatele Paulino Pania and Fepulea’i Faleniu Alesana.

A new unit will soon be established within the Ministry of Works, Transport and Infrastructure to implement the newlylaunched Transport Sector Plan 2014-2019.

The Unit will be called the Transport Sector Coordination Unit (T.S.C.U).

This was revealed by the Minister of Works, Transport and Infrastructure, Manu’alesagalala Enokati Posala, yesterday.

He was speaking during the official launch of the plan yesterday morning at the Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese Efi building.

He said the plan was established with the idea to ensure several key priorities that will lead to the enhancement and development of the transport sector in Samoa.

The major focus is a “quality of life for all Samoans” specifically in the transport sector.

The Plan’s vision is,” sustainable, safe, secure and environmentally responsible transport network that supports Samoa’s economic and social development and contributes to improving the quality of life for all Samoans”.

It addresses all area of transport; sea, air, and land he added.

The five key goals are;

1. Strengthen transport sector governance framework

2. Improve, sustain and climate proof road transport network,

3. Improve effectiveness, safety, security and competitiveness of maritime services

4. Upgrade the capacity, safety, security of air transport services and to ensure

5. Environmentally sustainable, energy efficient and socially responsible transport sector.

He said the endorsement of the Plan was made by Cabinet Development Committee in February this year. A five-year plan comes in two volumes; Volume 1 – outlining the main framework of action for the plan and Volume II – highlighting key analysis and trends used in formulating the TSP.

“The plan provides a coordinated planning framework that promotes a whole of Government perspective in the prioritisation and funding of investment in the transport sector for the next five years.”

The Minister said the sector plan provides the necessary framework to guide the development and funding of the sector in the next five years.
