Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sa’ilele Malielegaoi is certainly a man with plenty of arrows in his bow.
At the Tanoa Tusitala Hotel on Tuesday night, he fired another one when he joined businessman, Tuatagaloa Joe Annandale, on stage to perform a couple of numbers. An appreciative crowd gave the Prime Minister and long and deserving applause after he serenaded them with his voice and ukulele.
It was a rare touch from the country’s leader, something that caught the audience by surprise.
A MOMENT TO REMEMBER: Businessman and musician, Tuatagaloa Joe Annandale and Prime Minister, Tuilaepa Sa'ilele Malielegaoi, perform during the Samoa Arts Council Gala night at Hotel Tanoa Tusitala on Tuesday night.
Many of them, dressed up in their finest, for an evening with all time favourite, George Veikoso, better known as Fiji.
The event was Samoa Arts Council inaugural Fundraising Gala.
The evening was to raise funds to allow the Council to develop and nurture future artists of Samoa.
President of the Samoa Arts Council, Tuilagi Allan Vaai, said the evening was extremely successful.
It allowed a number of local artists to perform, including some who had retired.
“S.A.C was launched last year by the Prime Minister with the purpose to raise awareness in Samoa about the value of the arts and the contribution the arts make to Samoa’s cultural identity,” Tuilagi said. “[And] so next year in March marks the third year anniversary of the Samoa Arts Council. We want to acknowledge everyone who supported us all the way.”
Away from his performance, Prime Minister Tuilaepa also delivered the keynote address.
“In events such as this, I have only one note,” he said. “Make it short and sweet and make sure it is colourful.” The biggest attraction of the night though was Fiji who shared the stage with local star, Mailo Ben Vai. Together, they took the audience through a journey down memory lane reviving and bringing back some old school hits.
Fiji told the Samoa Observer that he was delighted to be in Samoa for the event and he would gladly return if given the opportunity.
