The village of Lauli’i is better protected from the elements this wet season thanks to the construction of a $799,500 rock wall on the banks of a river that runs through the village.
Designed by Isikuki Punivalu and Associates, the project, carried out by Lucky Construction, was officially dedicated yesterday.
Prime Minister, Tuilaepa Sa’ilele Malielegaoi, who was among government officials present during the launch, spoke about the importance of shielding the villagers from potential flooding.
The wall, he said, will also go a long way to stop erosion on the riverbanks.
Tuilaepa said the severity of extreme climate patterns was no longer a secret and the wall at Lauli’i is one of many government projects designed to mitigate the impact of climate change.
Over the years, the village of Lauli’i has not been spared from damages due to river flooding, storm surges and strong winds.
“The Ministry conducted a risk assessment which revealed the need to construct such a measure to accommodate the issue of riverbank inundation due to strong wave activities and to minimize bank erosions,” said Tuilaepa.
“Today we witness the successful completion of this project.” The construction of the wall started in May.
The project was fully funded under through the Cyclone Evan Recovery Programme.
