The Samoa Cancer Society is in a better position today financially to do its work thanks to the generosity and initiative of a legendary Samoan.
On Friday, the Managing Director of Pound for Pound, Tuigamala Vaaiga Tuigamala, and his wife, Daphne Tuigamala, presented the Society a cheque of $17,700 raised during its recent fight night at Tuana’imato.
The former All Black and Manu Samoa said that in Auckland, he has always been involved with the Cancer Society there.
So when he moved to Samoa to promote boxing here, he was looking for a charity to help.
“One of my friends brought up the Samoa Cancer Society and I thought what better charity than this because I am involved in the Cancer Society back home and so I know what is like to help those who have this deadly disease,” said Tuigamala.
“I have also looked into how the charity will spend their money and so the Samoa Cancer Society are helping to raise public awareness to combat the growing disease as many have lost their lives due to a lack of awareness.”
“So I hope that we will continue this partnership with the Samoa Cancer Society in the future.”
The President of the Samoa Cancer Society, Leiataualesa Daryl Clarke, accepted the cheque. He said he was extremely grateful to Tuigamala and his team and Pound for Pound for their assistance.
“This money will help support our outreach programmes that we are taking to the villages to talk to them about cancer and also public awareness,” he said.
“It will also help our nurses who deal with cancer patients.”
“Not only that but it will help with overseas treatment we push for our cancer patients to get opportunities to seek further treatment overseas.”
The Samoa Cancer Society was established in 1998. It is run by a small and dedicated team whose aim is to reduce the number of people in Samoa diagnosed with cancer and ensure the best quality of life for those affected by cancer.
The Society promotes healthy lifestyles to reduce the risk of developing cancer and encourage early detection and effective treatment of cancer.
