It’s been about a year since Kaino Thomsen Fuataga took the Pacific and Oceania arena by storm to become Samoa’s first Taekwondo competitor to reach the Olympic Games.
He was ranked 15th in the World Taekwondo Federation Heavyweight Division rankings after the 2012 London Olympic Games, but the 22-year-old has since shelved his sports passion to help his family Business.
K.L. Security was founded by his late father, Fuataga Kasimani Lautusi 30 years ago. The company has since blossomed from one employee 30 years ago to more than 120 security guards today.
Mr. Fuataga is the Marketing Manager and the self defense trainer for their Business, which puts his 2nd Dan Black Belt to good use.
The 22-year-old is now gearing up for a different kind of challenge, which he hopes will also put Samoa on the world map.
Certified as a Close Personal Protection Officer, Mr. Fuataga is keen to bodyguard any one of the three thousand guests and VIP’s who will be attending the Small Island Developing States Conference in Apia next September.
“I see it as a competition with bodyguard and security services overseas,” he said.
“That’s kind of how we are as athletes; always competitive.

“With 3,000 overseas delegates attending and the whole world watching the SIDS event, we hope to do our part in lifting the profile of Samoa in respect to security services.
“Excellent security services can turn important and high level heads and it can attract ambassadors from other countries and promote Samoa as a safe tourist destination,” he said. Mr. Fuataga has had his share of personal body guarding over the last 3 years with KL Security providing this service for various artists such as Lukie D, Savage, Fiji and most recently for the band members of UB40 during their first ever concert held in Apia in 2012.
His sentiments are echoed by younger brother Fritz who is the company’s General Manager.“We are constantly up-skilling our staff with specific training in this area, which we believe is important due to the influx of renowned artists, guests and dignitaries to our shores. Security helps make their stay “a memorable and safe experience,” said Fritz who is also a certified 1st Dan Black Belt holder in Taekwondo martial arts.
“K.L. Security has other services on offer not only in personal body guarding but the entire ten yards in security services.
“K.L. continues to pioneer the way in providing top level security services in Samoa and they have guards in distinctive blue uniforms who are welltrained and are prepared for any incidents, sickness or natural disasters, which may strike”, he said.
Their staff are also certified for Assets and Property Protection and have started a new guard patrol electronic system as an added service, he said.
The United Nations along with Police authorities from New Zealand and Australia will be assisting Samoa Police to provide security for the S.I.D.S. conference to be held in Samoa, and the Fuataga brothers said they will be honoured if given the opportunity to showcase their security capabilities at this event.
They hope to contribute to Samoa’s profile as the best ever in the region in terms of safety and hospitality, as they remain true to their company logo: “KL Security, Securing & Protecting our Samoa”.
