Twenty three young students were given awards last Friday for their winning answers to environmental quizzes published in newspapers, with an increasing number from villages.
Previously, the bulk of the entries had come from schools around the capital, Apia.
“The ministry noticed that there are rural areas schools now entering the environmental quiz,” said Acting Chief Executive Officer of M.N.R.E., Peseta Elisaia Talouli “This is a very good sign that there are growing numbers of children interested in the environment.”
In past years, most of the students competing were from schools around town but that has changed, he said. “New schools entering in the competition include Fusi Primary School, Malie, Vaitele, Aiga o le Tai, Apolima, Tafitoala and others.”
Peseta thanked the students. He confirmed that the number of children competing has increased.
“The competition is not for one week or month it is for the whole year,” he said.
“We advertised in newspapers and that’s where we came up with these children getting prizes as you are now witnessing today.” “Hopefully these children will develop their understanding through this programme so when they grow older they will become great leaders that push the importance of the environment in Samoa.” “To all the parents, thank you very much for your support in so many ways.”
“We would like to thank all the students who took part in last year’s competition on our Children’s Corner.”
“To all the sponsors, Bluesky Samoa, Samoa Stationery and Books, Business System Ltd, CCK Maxkar Limited especially the Samoa Land Corporation, thank you very much.”
The overall winner, Taranaki Iakopo from Fagali’i Primary School said that he was very happy to be the overall winner. “I am very excited and I will continue to answer the questions on the environment this year, for as long as I am still accepted.”
