Mammography is the process of using low-energy X-rays to examine the human breast, which is used as a diagnostic and screening tool. The goal of mammography is the early detection of breast cancer.

Mammography was introduced in to Samoa in 1999. For ten years, the first mammography machine was in operation until it broke down in 2010. A new computerized mammography machine was eventually installed in August 2014 at the new hospital.

The practical attachment to the Manukau Super Clinic will provide Samoa’s representative with new knowledge and training on new computerised machinery and gain experience in various techniques and protocols and up-skilling in basic clinical indications and interpretations.

The training opportunity was proposed through Samoa and Manukau Institutional Linkage Program under the Clinical Services Support.

Representing Samoa is the National Health Services Principal Mammographer, Ms Tulai Tupe, who is expected to train her mammography staff upon completion of this attachment and her return to Samoa.

WASTE TYRES BANNED

Cabinet has banned the importation of any form of waste tyres, also known as end-of-life tyres, in to Samoa.

The prohibition is a direct result of health concerns for the public and protection for the environment.

Any importation of waste tyres will contribute significantly to current excessive waste levels in the country, and subsequent waste- related problems for Samoa.

Waste tyres can be breeding grounds for disease-carrying mosquitoes and rodents.

Storage piles can be a major fire hazard and are extremely difficult to extinguish.

There are legislations and policies to regulate waste management which include:

• Waste Management Act 2010;

• Planning and Urban Management Act 2004;

• Quarantine (Biosecurity) Act 2005;

• National Chemicals and Hazardous Waste Management Policy 2012 – MNRE.
