Newcastle Falcons’ Alesana Tuilagi has not given up on his Rugby World Cup dream despite having been out of the Samoan squad for almost two years.
The 33-year-old scored one of the Falcons’ five tries in last weekend’s 31-13 triumph at London Irish, and has one eye on a World Cup campaign which sees Samoa tackling Scotland at St James’ Park on October 10.
“If you play well for your club you start to think about the next level,” said Tuilagi, who has scored 17 tries in his 29 Samoan caps over an 11-year period.
“The World Cup would be great but there is a lot of rugby between now and then, and I am just keeping my head down trying to win games with Newcastle. “Hopefully I will get the chance to play for Samoa again some day, but that only comes through my performances at the Falcons.”
Newcastle travel to Exeter on Saturday in a rich run of form, recording four-try bonus points in each of their last six games.
Tuilagi said: “We can beat any team at the moment and we just need to keep that confidence and belief.
“We can move forward as a club and become part of that group in the top half if we keep working like this until the end of the season.
“The boys are enjoying training and that is translating to the games. The youngsters and the older guys are all part of the same group.”
