President of the Association, Peseta Kasiano Ioane said the cheque is to help out with the teachers’ pay.
“We received a request from the school that they needed help with the teachers’ salaries,” said Peseta.
Deputy Principal of the College, Brother Bryan Stanaway acknowledged the support from the Old Pupils’ Association.
“The importance of this cheque that the Old Boys and Girls of Marist presented to us, is that it gives us the chance to recognize our staff,” said Brother Bryan.
“As you are aware the teachers have a seven percent pay rise across the nation. We just couldn’t do that until the Association came forward and said this is our help towards the staff salaries.
“So the importance of this cheque is to recognize the work and the profession of some of our staff and actually to put them up at the same rate of pay as has been provided for government schools.”
Brother Bryan was not sure if the amount would be enough for the pay rise. However he said, “It’s very close to it, and it is enough because we can supplement the rest but to receive this grant just makes it possible to keep going for the year.
“However, the financial situation is one thing but what is important is to recognize the staff for what they have done as professionals. We got 30 students who qualified with 15 and less on their grades and 26 who qualified with 19 and less so there are actually 56 students out of 89 qualified to go to NUS.
“I must say that I have only been here for three years but it is by far the best result we have ever achieved and I think we might have to go back a long way to find better results.
“But again it links to what our ex-students have just done.
"They are recognizing our staff because if anybody has helped the students achieve those pass marks last year, it really was the staff.
“There are 22 full time teachers plus a secretary and the usual workers around the place who keep the school running.”
