High-level officials from all over the world are gathering in Apia for a very important meeting starting at Hotel Tanoa Tusitala today.
The Regional Energy Efficiency Workshop is being jointly organised by the Asian Development Bank (A.D.B) and the International Institute for Energy Conservation (I.I.E.C).
The meeting is to gather Pacific community stakeholders to disseminate some of the lessons learned while implementing the Promoting Energy Efficiency in the Pacific (P.E.E.P-2) regional technical assistance.
“We are delighted to welcome representatives from around the world to discuss some of the key challenges, solutions, and future goals for energy efficient and economically viable development in the Pacific Island Nations,” says Robert Guild Director, Transport, Energy and Natural Resources Pacific Department A.D.B in a letter to the participants.
“As many of our participants will be aware, energy security is among the key developmental challenges facing the Pacific Developing Member Countries (PDMCs).
“Promoting efficient use of scarce (and expensive) energy resources is essential for bolstering countries’ energy security. This has been the focus of PEEP-2.” The two-day workshop will share some of the knowledge and experience gained during PEEP-2’s implementation in order to enhance project sustainability and replication for countries throughout the region.
“By sharing key achievements and discussing some of the constraints encountered during PEEP-2’s implementation, attendees will gain a broader perspective of what components to project implementation were successful and how they might be modified or applied to different countries within the region.”
The agenda for the meeting features numerous knowledgeable speakers, encompassing the perspectives of project implementers, stakeholders, and funding agencies in order to provide participants with a deeper understanding of project design and implementation.
The various sessions will cover:
• Best practices in energy efficiency and policy frameworks, development and implementation of policy measures • Specific project implementation and case studies,
• Donor perspectives on market opportunities and specific barriers in the pacific The panels and presentations will contribute to subsequent working sessions and discussion of the next steps and way forward.
