Patients needing life saving treatment at the national hospital will have more reasons to thank China.
On top of funding the construction of a new hospital and other key health facilities, the Chinese government yesterday opened its wallet again to donate much-needed equipment to the National Health Services.
China’s Ambassador to Samoa, Li Yanduan, presented the equipment to the Minister of Health, Tuitama Dr. Leao Tuitama.
The equipment included a portable ultrasound scanner, foetus ventilator and others to be used for surgery, the paediatric unit and imaging.
“China and Samoa are good friends,” said Ambassador Li.
“The Chinese government takes the people-oriented cooperation with Samoa very seriously and makes its every effort to do the cooperation beneficial to local people.”
“[And] a good example is the cooperation between us in the healthcare.”
According to the Ambassador, since 1986, China has sent 14 twoyear term medical teams at the request of the government.
“So far there have been as many as 112 doctors successively working in the National Hospital.”
“At present there are eight Chinese specialists who are working here in medical, obstetrics and gynaecology and imaging departments.”
Ambassador Li also announced that in the next five years, China would provide 5,000 training opportunities for Pacific Islanders – including in the area of healthcare.
“I hope more Samoan healthcare people could benefit from the programme,” she said.
“The facts tell us that the cooperation between our two countries in the field of healthcare is very fruitful and good for the service of the people.”
“We will work with our Samoan counterparts together to continue the cooperation and through which the more benefits would be brought to the local patients.”
The Minister of Health, Tuitama, thanked Ambassador Li and acknowledged the assistance from the people of China.
