Digicel Samoa continued its support for Special Olympics Samoa yesterday, presenting a $40,000 cheque to the Special Olympics Samoa (S.O.S.) at the Digicel’s Headquarters.

“Special Olympics Samoa is very special to Digicel,” said Digicel Chief Executive Officer, Pepe Christian Fruean.

“It grew with Digicel and is one reason Digicel initiated this organization, to develop our young special athletes and providing to themselves, families, community and the world that they can make a difference, that they can progress into greater individuals, into known athletes.

“We would like to encourage the other local businesses, community groups, individuals and entities that can contribute, to do so, for this worthy organization.”

Special Olympics Samoa Director, Tusitina Nu’uvali said S.O.S. is a very special organisation in the Pacific as it has provided the opportunity for a small island nation to have representatives participate at the global level.

“It has definitely helped break down barriers and encouraged a whole new attitude that everyone has the ability to represent the country and make their families and communities proud,” she said.

“Digicel Samoa’s support will go towards the development of Special Olympics Samoa through their Communications, Administrations and Event programmes throughout the year and also include the voluntary work of Digicel Samoa staff who will be made available to participate in a lead up programme, coaching and support to the athletes and management of Special Olympics Samoa.

“Samoa had successfully returned from the 2011 games by bringing 8 medals from their first endeavour, competing against 7,500 athletes from 185 countries in the summer games.

“Further success had seen Samoa return from the first ever Asia Pacific Games with 22 medals (8 gold’s, 9 silvers, 5 bronze) and exceed all expectations. Digicel’s Head of Corporate Affairs, Le’aupepe Tala’i Jr. Lene was asked if there is a time limit on Digicel sponsoring S.O.S.

“We first became a Special Olympics Samoa sponsor in the year 2009 and we renew the contract with them every year. It has been five years since we became the major sponsor for the organisation.

“Digicel Samoa has been sponsoring a lot of teams that represents Samoa in different tournaments but we notice that Special Olympics Samoa has brought back more medals than all the other teams that Digicel is sponsoring.”

The money presented yesterday will be used for better equipment inside the office such as computers among other things.
