The celebrations of the Literacy Week moved to the National Museum of Samoa last night. There, speakers included writer, Lani Wendt Young, and art teacher, Leua Latai, performing arts lecturer, Fiona Collins and Samoa Observer weekly columnist, Legrande Lolo.

They spoke about the importance of literacy.

The Museum of Samoa is part of the campaign to empower the community to teach the children not only to read and write but to love reading and writing.

Literacy is an advantage for every generation, the Museum believes. “We learn more and equip ourselves more with the tools of literacy. But why do we need to equip ourselves?”  a statement from the Museum reads. “Change and progress is fast and growing. Knowing how to stay in tune with these two things and also being true to our cultural heritage is a museum goal.  “We remind of the importance of our culture in maintaining a strong hold of our moral values while at the same time welcoming the inevitable changes.” Creative art is a tool that is also used to entice interest among students and children.
