The work of the Police’s Canine Unit to control the number of stray dogs in Samoa has been made a lot easier, thanks to the New Zealand government.
On Monday, equipment and vehicles donated by New Zealand were presented by New Zealand High Commissioner, Jackie Frizelle, to the Minister of Police and Prisons, Sala Fata Pinati.
The donations included two Ford Rangers, two trailers, traps that will be used to attract stray dogs, dog beds, dog food and catch poles.
Canine Control Officer, Maseiga Lauina, said the assistance would go a long way to help their work.
“The vehicle and traps will be very helpful,” he said.
“Trying to lure stray dogs has been very difficult and trying to approach the dogs has never been very successful in the past.”
“That’s because the dogs usually scatter off when any one of the officers try to approach them. “
“So with the traps that have been provided, which are effectively cages, we can now lure the dogs into them using food.”
Once the dogs go into the cages, the traps shut, keeping them in there.
Most of the equipment will be used at the temporary dog shelter being set up at Vaitele opposite the Land Transport Authority.
