The Land Transport Authority (L.T.A) is calling on vehicle owners to change the registration of vehicles to their names before bringing them in for registration.
The message is from the Chairman of the Standardization Taxi and Ownership Sub-Committee, Mata’afa Sepelini Poufa, who called a press conference on Monday, to elaborate on the issue.
The media was told that there have been many cases where vehicles are sold to new owners and yet the ownership papers are not changed.
“It has come to the attention of the L.T.A. that many vehicles involved in accidents do not belong to the people that are driving these cars,” said Mata’afa.
“Instead many of these vehicles are still registered to their former owners.”
Now, the Authority is moving to stop this.
Effective yesterday, the Authority enforced section 17 of the Road Traffic Ordinance 1960”.
This section requires that all vehicles registered with the L.T.A. must also be registered under the name of the current or existing owner.
Mata’afa also advises that before queuing for re-registration with the vehicle inspection team that the ownership status and details of the vehicle are checked by the vehicle certification officers to avoid unnecessary delays.
The fee for transfer of ownership with L.T.A. is $120 for all private vehicles and $190 for buses and taxis.
With regards to vehicles bought from car dealers, the Authority advises owners to ask for a certificate of transfer of ownership.
“This responsibility of registering your vehicle after it has been bought from a car dealer is not that of the car dealer but the new owner,” said Mata’afa.
He stressed that it is necessary that members of the public to abide by this new system to ensure a smooth running of things related to the re-registration of vehicles and an up-to-date record for the Authority.
