A 27-year-old woman, who is fighting for her life at the Moto’otua Hospital after she was stabbed last Saturday morning, is lucky to be alive.
Found “with no clothes” and “screaming hysterically,” she had lost a lot of blood from multiple stab wounds to her body and her face.
Yesterday, Fa’aolataga Malaki, from Togafuafua, relived the horror when he spoke to the Samoa Observer about the incident.
“There were cuts all over her face,” he said. “She also had tooth marks on her arms and a big cut across her chest."
“She kept on crying hysterically."
“Through her pain, she was trying to ask us who hurt her. However, her wounds were so deep and she was in so much pain.”
Mr Malaki said he was among the first people to reach the woman.
“We helped take her to the hospital,” he said. “We were on our way to the hospital when all she managed to say to us was that she was raped."
“That’s all she said to us on the way to the hospital.”
Mr Malaki said the woman was attacked by one person, not four as it has been suggested.
“It was around 3.30 on Saturday morning going on to 4. I was going home after having few drinks with some friends around the area, not far from where I live."
“I heard a loud voice screaming "fia ola!" (help me, I want to live). I ran to the front of the road to see what was happening because I thought it was one of my friends that I was drinking with.”
It wasn't.
“What I saw instead was a female with no clothes on and my friends were helping her because she couldn’t walk properly."
“So we laid her down and one of my friends turned on the light of his mobile phone and that was when we saw she was badly hurt.”
The victim, he said, was very weak and that she was covered with blood.
Mr Malaki said the woman was not drunk.
On Monday, the Assistant Police Commissioner, Fauono Talalelei Tapu, confirmed the incident.
“The residents in the area heard a female screaming out really loudly,” he said.
“They said it was the sound of someone who desperately needed help and so they ran to where the voice was coming from."
“That’s when they saw a female coming towards them all covered in blood.”
Fauono said the woman was stabbed all over her body, including her face.
“So the people took the victim to the hospital and she has been in Acute 7 ever since. Doctors are monitoring her condition.”
The Assistant Commissioner said they still have not been able to speak with her because she is “in a critical condition and she cannot talk.”
The suspect has been found.
He is in custody.
Fauono declined to speculate on why the stabbing took place.
“All I can say is that the suspect is a 24-year-old male from the village of Togafu’afu’a and Vaimea, he said."
“He was found on the same night of the incident and has now been charged with causing injuries. We are waiting for the final medical report to finalize the charges.”
The accused is scheduled to appear in Court on 21 July."
