ALL EARS: Food handlers and members of the business community present during the training.
That is the message from the government for food vendors as they gear up to feed thousands of visitors to Samoa during the Teuila Festival and the Small Island Development States (S.I.D.S) conference in September.

On Tuesday, the Samoa Tourism Authority (S.T.A) and the Ministry of Health co-hosted a training for business owners, food handlers and operators who will be allowed to set up “official” stalls during the meeting.

Health’s Assistant C.E.O in Health Protection and Enforcement, Mae’e Ualesi Silva, said the training focused on three important aspects related to food safety and hygiene. They are:

• The area where the food will be prepared.
• Preparations of the food including the right temperature to store ingredients.
• Cleanliness of food handlers and their food.

“The whole idea is to ensure that business owners and food handlers will be abiding by our national standards,” said Mae’e.

More than 150 participants attended the meeting.
“This is basically to raise awareness for food handlers so that they will understand and meet the Ministry of Health’s food safety requirements,” she added.

Associate Minister of Tourism, Tafua Maluelue Tafua, said the preparation of food is a critical part of Samoa’s ability to host S.I.D.S.

The Associate Minister said it is important for the people involved to get it right because as a country, we want to give visitors the best experience, not one they would want to forget because of bad food.

“The S.I.D.S Conference in September 2014 is a global event – the global community will be visiting Samoa en mass and such great opportunities must be taken with great appreciation."

“Most importantly, Samoa must be well prepared to host the multitude of visitors to our great island nation.”
