The Literacy Week wrapped up yesterday with a fundraising golf tournament at Faleata, which had a brand new Ford Ranger as its biggest prize.
The truck was on offer for the first hole in one on the 10th hole. Sadly, no one won it.
But there were other prizes, including a 50 inch LED Samsung TV and much more.
Speaking about the Week that was, the Chairperson of the Literacy Week Committee, Doreen Roebeck-Tuala, hailed the week-long celebration, dedicated to the promotion of reading among students.
She said it was a huge success.
“Many leaders visited schools as part of the literacy program not only in Upolu but also in the big island of Savai’i,” she said.
This was one of many activities carried out.
“The most important message that we tried to send out is ‘working together’, especially to the parents. We need them to work together with us to push the children in making reading an everyday habit for them.”
“Reading is the foundation of child’s life in learning,” she said.
The Ministry of Education and Samoa Stationery and Books raised $21,000 during the tournament. The money will be given to the Samoa Victim Support Group, Sei Oriana Trust, Nelson Memorial Library and Savai’i Library in the Big Island of
Savai’i to promote literacy among its members.
