The novel is dedicated to a friend who committed suicide.

“It’s basically to raise awareness about youth suicide in Samoa because we all understand that it has become a big problem in our country,” she said.

“My friend, Sabbath Maua’i...he was like a brother to me and when he died, I really wanted to do something. I wanted an initiative to tell the youth of Samoa that there’s more to life.”

Ms. Koria is especially grateful everyone who have made it all possible for her to complete the book.

“This is a dream come true and I just want to thank my parents, Sina Va’ai my editor, friends, family, church and everyone for their support.”

Her advice for the youth of Samoa?

“There’s always hope for tomorrow,” she said. “There’s more in life than temporary problems and you have so much value as a person - your life matters. Think about the potential and know that how you feel today may not be the way you feel tomorrow.”

Jasmine is the daughter of Eteuati Filipo of Satupaitea and Lelepa, Savai’i and his wife Daisy from Papua New Guinea.

Ms. Koria is currently studying towards the Bachelor Arts with a double major in Political Science and International Relations at Victoria University, Wellington.

She was born in Papua New Guinea on 23 July 1997. Her parents returned to Samoa when she was only a year old where she received all her primary and secondary education. She completed the Foundation Programme at the National University of Samoa in 2014. She also launched a poetry book titled ‘The Voyager’.

Her poems are included in the Secondary School English Curriculum and are now taught at the Year 12 and 13 levels.
